Kung Fu Panda Cootie Catchers

Kung Fu Panda Cootie CatcherOkay, I'll admit it. When I came across the Kung Fu Panda Cootie Catcher project on the HP Activity Center, I gasped with delight. I am not a gasper, generally speaking, but my excitement over seeing this project caught me off guard and a gasp was my natural response.

Let me explain. Cootie catchers were, or at least seemed to be, at the height of their popularity in 1983, when I was in the 3rd grade. Because everyone in my class loved them so much, they were a favorite project for our teacher to give us on a rainy day. We used colored construction paper or drew our own pictures on them. We made them giant, teeny tiny, and everything in between. And by "we" I mean everyone but me. I could never seem to make them. So much folding.

Embarrassing, I know, but the reality was that no matter how hard I tried, mine just never seemed to turn out right. Hence, my excitement over seeing the return of the cootie catcher on the Activity Center. This was my shot at redemption so I jumped all over it.
Kung Fu Panda Cootie CatcherI downloaded and printed the artwork and I also made sure to print out the written directions and diagrams.

The assembly of the project was really easy. I just had to make sure my folds were nice and crisp so that it would operate smoothly when I finished.

The best part of the project, besides that fact that the imagery is awesome and far more visually pleasing than anything I could have created on my own, is that I got to write my own words of wisdom under the flaps. Because I planned to give this cootie catcher to my four-year-old nephew (who is anxiously awaiting the release of the Kung Fu Panda movie), I thought I would pepper it with instructions that his mom would find helpful. I do what I can to help out parents whenever possible. I believe the children are our future.

Now, I would like to state for the record that if, in the 3rd grade, I had been provided with a clear instructional handout like the one on the Activity Center, I'm sure I would have been able to conquer this project. Nonetheless, completing it in my 30's still feels pretty good.
